Guess what, the movie is already shot and is now in the editing process! The toughest part is over and done with! This ambitious comedy, with an ensemble of over 80 phenomenal actors and actresses and a slew of locations, from baseball stadiums to NYC bars, is now looking forward and fully focusing on spreading the word to let America know that this years summer flick will be REUNION 108!

I heard an interview with Matt Damon a few years ago, he was asked how his Academy Award winning script, Good Will Hunting, came into being. He responded (and I’m paraphrasing) that he had notes lying around that he eventually put together. Well, I should be so lucky, as that’s the way I compiled the notes of my screenplay, Reunion 108. Come to think of it, I imagine many writers operate this way.

I often tell my closest sportswriter friend, Paul Hagen, that I’ve always ‘ascribed to be a scribe’, and though the denotative meaning of that phrase doesn’t quite match my connotative usage, Paul has been nice enough not to correct me after decades of hearing it. As long as I can remember however, I have had an interest in writing; love that means of expression. I wish I could say that this love started in my formative years during the many hours I spent in the English office during my junior year in high school, but alas, the only English Literature I absorbed from teachers, Malinda Sayers, Beth Byrd or Judy Pitts was because they were hot, good-looking women.

At the risk of sounding self-important, it is hard to break down the many layers of Reunion 108. The movie is to entertain, inform, and to make a statement or two (hundred). There are many situations we brought to the screen that I have not seen or heard in any other movie, past or present, though I have to admit that Californication is slowly eroding at the uniqueness of a few of my themes, damn that David Duchovny! Then again, my diatribe against erosion is not just directed at him, I recently saw Five Year Engagement, and Jason Segel introduced the concept of males faking orgasms. Drat! We addressed that too, with actor, Laurie Folkes providing the demonstration, hurry up and get this movie to the theaters!

A lot of the baseball humor in Reunion 108 derives from a personal ideology that the sport of baseball allows and often begs for older adolescents to retain their youthful indiscretions well into adulthood. Us old-timers are still young at heart and spirit, it’s just we may not recover nearly as quickly as we did decades ago. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the bird’s-eye view.

Reunion 108 – Casting Breakdown

An early altercation between two ‘senior’ former teammates sets the stage for the unpredictable and potentially volatile nature of this once in a lifetime get together.  There are no limits or boundaries to the players’ flashbacks to the past, and sensitivity training is a concept that hasn’t reached these retired athletes and in some cases their spouses as well.

After some tutoring from the ‘take charge’ veteran player, Teddy Mitchell, this diverse group of fifteen former players agree, that, despite the decades apart, the younger players still speak the same baseball language as the old-timers.  Mitchell is not the only dominant personality among the players; Casey Kelly, a young, white New England speedster is the yin to the yang of Mombo, an iconoclastic African-American twenty-five years his senior, and race, nor age has anything to do with their interactions, well, not in the truest denotative sense.

Topics covered in and out of the flashbacks include, the players disdain of the media, the effects of amphetamines versus those of sleeping pills, retribution through sex, retribution through refusal of sex, the dangers of sex, sex with alleged family members, the lack of sex due to feminine hygiene; yes, there is a lot of sex in this movie.  They also deal with premature anticipation, sociopathic posterior watching and funeral home casket confessions … and these are the ones we hope will pass the censors.  Despite the appearance of soliciting cult-like status, this film does have a traditional Hollywood happy ending, well, it does if you delve deep below the surface.

“Reunion 108” is a full-length, comedy feature film that intends to offend and entertain.   It strives to be what can only be described as the best of “Bull Durham” intermingled with “Get Him to the Greek” and promises to be a no holds bar behind the scenes and in your face look into the world of professional baseball.
